Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why is it important to finish ceramics appropriately?

Due to the extreme hardness of materials such as zirconia and lithium disilicate, it is challenging to achieve a truly smooth surface when finishing ceramic restorations. If a restoration isn’t finished properly, it can result in microfracturing and abrasion of adjacent teeth. It is also challenging to achieve a truly high-gloss finish which helps give a natural and esthetic look to the restoration.

  • What is the best way to adjust and polish ceramics?

Ceramics should be finished using adjusters and polishers that are designed specifically for these materials. The Jiffy Universal System gives you the highest quality adjusters and polishers available. These adjusters and polishers are made of specially formulated Ultradent diamond grit, which enables you to achieve the highest quality finish possible. The system comprises a simple two-step process at each stage that effectively smooths and polishes all ceramic materials.

  • What makes the Jiffy Universal finishing system different than others systems for ceramics?

The Jiffy Universal System is truly a universal system, which means that all adjusters and polishers are equally effective on all ceramics, including porcelain, zirconia, and lithium disilicate. This eliminates the need to purchase multiple kits and pieces, saving you time and money while helping you achieve the best finish possible on all of your restorations.

  • Is there still a need for the Extraoral Kit if my practice uses a laboratory to fabricate ceramic crowns?

Yes. We find that many dentists who use a laboratory instead of in-office milling have a need to adjust and polish lab-crafted restorations extraorally.

  • How long will the Jiffy adjusters and polishers last?

Jiffy adjusters and polishers are designed for a long life of service. They are made of the highest quality materials and crafted with the most advanced manufacturing methods available today. The autoclavable aluminum block that is included with each kit is designed to extend the life of each piece by preventing warping from bagging separate pieces in the autoclave and dropping pieces on the floor.

Longevity of Jiffy adjusters and polishers can depend on several factors, including the use of an electric handpiece, and whether the pieces are maintained according to the recommended care and maintenance procedures.

  • Can Jiffy Natural Universal and Jiffy Universal instruments be autoclaved?

Yes. Refer to the Disinfection and Sterilization procedures prior to use for complete care and maintenance instructions and recommendations for use.

  • Is there warranty coverage on Jiffy Universal products?

Jiffy Universal adjusters and polishers come with a six-month warranty that covers manufacturer defect only. This does not include normal wear and tear, accidental damage, improper care, misuse, user negligence, or failure to use the product in accordance with the manufacturer’s Disinfection and Sterilization procedures.

  • My lab recommends adjusting and polishing zirconia under water or using a lot of water when working with adjusters and polishers. Do I need to adjust and polish zirconia with water when using the Jiffy Universal?

Labs use diamonds for adjusting, which generate heat and require water for cooling. That is why labs recommend the use of water.  The grinders and polishers in the Jiffy Universal Extraoral Adjusting and Polishing Kit are specially formulated to generate less heat, so there is not much need to use large amounts of water—if any—with these instruments. However, we do recommend copious amounts of water when using the Universal Intraoral Jiffy Fine Football and Jiffy Fine Round End Taper Diamonds when doing intraoral adjustments.

  • Is it really necessary to polish prior to crystallization when working with lithium disilicate (e.g. IPS e.max®*)? Why isn’t it common for those who use in-office milling to polish before glazing?

Leading manufacturers of finishing systems for high-strength ceramics, including Ultradent, recommend polishing prior to crystallization. This step is often skipped because the value of polishing is often not fully understood.

Polishing lithium disilicate in the pre-crystallized state for is recommended because a polished surface will remain smooth longer than a glazed surface. The glaze on a crystallized crown will eventually wear away on contact areas. Polishing during the blue state prior to firing will ensure a smooth surface underneath the glaze, increasing the durability and life of the restoration. Only doctors who use in-office milling machines will encounter the pre-crystallized state.

  • What is a sprue? Can the Jiffy Universal System remove sprues?

A sprue is a piece of material that is left on a restoration when it is separated from the casting mold or the milling block/disc. Casting is the process by which a wax pattern of a restoration is converted to a replicate in dental alloy. The casting process is used to make dental restorations such as inlays, onlays, crowns, bridges, and removable partial dentures.

The coarse green Jiffy adjuster is perfect for quickly and easily removing sprues.

  • Should all adjusters and polishers in the Jiffy ceramic or composite kits be autoclaved in the aluminum block, even if they were not used?

If an adjuster or polisher is not used or contaminated in some way, it does not need to be sterilized. The sterilization process gradually wears down the integrity of the instruments over time.
