Cleaning and Shaping or...Shaping to Clean!

Dr. Carlos Ramos | 7 CE Credits

Overview

The removal of pathogens from root canals is difficult, and current root canal treatment techniques are unable to consistently disinfect the canal space. Instrumentation with engine-driven nickel-titanium instruments alone does not eliminate the bacteria load or remove soft-tissue debris. It is an interesting paradox, we first create (and sometimes even pack) debris, only to have to remove it all later; but now there are more effective and safer methods for cleaning the canal system.

The real cleaning comes from the action of the irrigation liquids, which must be used properly, respecting appropriate volume, time of action, and concentration. We will discuss safe deep cleaining techniques using a piezoelectric ultrasonic device and state-of-the-art nickel-titanium irrigation tips to help avoid accidental extrusion of the irrigants.

In just one day, you will gain practical skills that can be immediately incorporated into your day-to-day workflow, and build confidence that your endodontic outcomes will be consistently successful.

You Will Learn

  • Emphasize the importance of determining and maintaining the right work length using an apex locator, achieving the correct working width, and cleaning/disinfecting during instrumentation.
  • Discuss chemical debridement techniques which are paramount in ensuring the canals are sufficiently cleaned before obturation. This includes techniques for delivering irrigants as close to the apical stop as possible without extruding to the periapical area.
  • Teach key factors in the instrumentation sequence and the interrelation between shaping of the root canal and subsequent chemo-mechanical cleaning of the space.
  • Examine safe deep cleaning techniques using a piezoelectric ultrasonic device and state-of-the-art nickel-titanium irrigation tips to help avoid accidental extrusion of the irrigants.

Dr. Carlos Ramos

Dr. Carlos Ramos graduated in 1987 with a degree in dentistry from the State University of Londrina in Brazil, and then received a scholarship to study in Japan. In 1990, he finished his residency in endodontics at University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, where he also attended a program in endodontics and received a Master of Science degree in 1993. In 1997, he then completed a PhD program, the same year he published his first book. From 1995 to 2012, he worked as a professor of endodontics at the State University of Londrina, where he coordinated the endodontics sector. During this time, he published three books and wrote more than a dozen chapters for various endodontics books. This was accomplished while working part-time exclusively as an endodontic specialist at his private office from 1987 to 2012. He has been granted four international patents, which have brought different devices to the world marketplace that use these patented technologies. He is an international speaker in endodontics, presenting lectures, hands-on workshops, and conferences worldwide each year. Dr. Ramos is the Clinical Affairs Endodontics Manager at Ultradent Products, Inc.
